Dr. Shen's main research interest lies in the area of condensed matter physics, with a focus on novel physics in quantum materials. He develops photon based experimental techniques, ranging from angle-resolved photoemission, soft x-ray scattering, time domain spectroscopy and scattering, and microwave imaging. These probes are also integrated with in-situ materials synthesis. He has created a body of literature on the electronic structure of quantum materials, including superconductors, semiconductors, novel magnets, topological insulators, and a novel form of carbon. He is best known for his discoveries of anomalous energy gaps in high temperature superconductors. His many major awards reflect his contributions.
