Huang is a scientific creator and pioneer of stretchable electronics, a transformative technology enabled by his discoveries and groundbreaking fundamental theories. He found how pre-strain with shape control can endow brittle inorganic semiconductors (e.g., silicon) with enormous stretchability (>150% strain), extremely low stiffness matching that of soft biomaterials, increased fatigue resistance, and conformability to arbitrary curvilinear surfaces. His theories constitute the scientific foundation of new technology such as stretchable batteries, sensors, circuits, radios and many commercial biomedical devices transforming medicine.
