Dr. William Newsome was the first to establish the relationship between the behavior of small neural populations and the perceptual performance of ananimal, using a motion perception task. Building on this work, he conducted some of the first studies on the effects of neuronal variability on perceptual performance, and elucidated the contributions of these signals to perceptual decisions.
