Research focuses on dynamic economic theory. Early work studied optimal control models, rational expectations models, and bubbles in such models. Later work developed statistical methods for detecting complex dynamical data generating processes. These methods are used today for detecting left-out-structure in the residuals of fitted models. Current research is (i) developing coupled dynamic economic/ecological systems models that allow data to speak to the possible presence of dynamical complexities, (ii) developing models of the spread of different belief systems in economic and financial markets contexts, (iii) developing methods of measuring the importance of nonmarket channels in structuring economic activity.
