He was elected President of the National Academy of Engineering in 1997. The NAE and the National Academy of Sciences operate under a congressional charter to provide advice to government on issues of science and engineering. He was a University Professor at the University of Virginia. His research spanned computer architecture, computer security, programming languages, and optimizing compilers. In 1988-90, he was also Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation. Prior to joining Virginia, he founded Tartan Laboratories based on research he did at Carnegie-Mellon University.
