Boyd's research and teaching centers on the role of nonprofit organizations in the United States and their contribution to the advancement of the sciences, humanities, and the arts and in meeting other societal needs. He focused on small nonprofit organizations which are central to community development. In addition, he had a particular interest in writing about the role of museums in contemporary society.
