L. H. Ballou University Professor; Professor of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Leading figure in the field of nonlinear Partial Differential Equations for the last half century. He was instrumental in beginning nonlinear scattering theory and made seminal and fundamental contributions in the study of mathematical field theory, nonlinear wave equations, dispersive equations, solitary waves and stability theory. He pioneered the recent explosive developments in kinetic theory with emphasis on regularity and stability. He made breakthroughs in his ongoing work on water waves with nonzero vorticity. His research opened up many new research fields which are very active today. He educated an excellent line of PhD students, several of whom have become leaders in the field of nonlinear Partial Differential Equations. John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the American Mathematical Society, recipient of the Institut Henri Poincar Prize.
