Research focuses on modern German literature and intellectual history with stress on comparative and socio-historical contexts. publications include books on german Expressionist literature and on Franz kafka, and numerous essays ranging from Schiller and Kierkegaard to Peter Handke. His current research centers on Nietzsche and on Heidegger, and on the forms and effects of secularization of religious sensibilities in literary, philosophical, and cultural-political discourse.
