Vann McGee's research contributed to the philosophy of logic and language, to the foundations of probability theory, and to the philosophy of mathematics. His work on conditionals, on the theory of truth, on reference, and on the semantic paradoxes is particularly influential, and has been and continues to be widely cited. His work centers around the ideals of truth and rationality, focusing on the idea of paradox. McGee's text Truth, Vagueness, and Paradox: An Essay on the Logic of Truth won the Johnsonian Prize in Philosophy by the Journal of Philosophy in 1988.
