The overall goal of the Hunter laboratory is to elucidate signaling pathways that utilize phosphorylation / dephosphorylation, ubiquitylation and sumoylation to modify protein post-translationally and thereby regulate proliferation and differentiation of mammalian cells and mediate the response of the cells to DNA damage and stress.  Perturbations in signaling pathways of this sort due to mutations are characteristic of cancer cells can lead to the development of new cancer drugs.
