Biochemist and cell biologist responsible for our current understanding of the channel proteins engaged in polypeptide translocation into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. Biochemical and structural analysis has guided understanding of the function and shape of the translocation pore.  Major contributions were also made to our understanding of ER morphology and the mechanism by which misfolded proteins of the ER are degraded (ERAD).
