Is the original Renaissance scholar and philologist: he is versed in the study and interpretation of maps, of film, and of texts both verbal and visual. He is particularly versed in the demonstration of the graphic impulse in literature, and in the ways in which the author/artist uses the work to communicate visually, through other means than the normal textual ones-'the graphic unconscious.' He is also a renowned translator, of Deleuze, de Certeau, and others. He has contributed numerous articles and book chapters, as well as many film analyses and studies.
