Lewis T. and Rosalind B. Apple Chair in Oncology, Professor of Medicine, Professor of Genetics, Director, Stem Cell Biology Section, Division of Oncology. Studies cancer genomics. Established early mouse models of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), defining roles of initiating mutations, progression mutations, and the cellular environment for leukemia development. Led group that sequenced first human cancer genomes (from AML patients), using next generation technologies. Directed efforts to define the mutational and epigenomic landscape of AML. Advocate for the development of Loan Repayment Programs at the NIH, and continues to shape national discussion of physician-scientist career pipeline. Received MERIT Award, National Institutes for Health (2000),  American Society of Hematology Mentor Award (2008) and E. Donnall Thomas Prize (2012), the Erasmus Hematology Prize (2015), and the NCI's Alfred G. Knudson Prize (2015). Past President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Elected to the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.  Appointed by President Obama to the National Cancer Advisory Board (2015).
