Emeritus Professor of Zoology and former Vice-Chancellor, University of Oxford. Main field of research is ecology, with a focus on insect populations and communities. Worked also on taxonomy and morphology of Heteroptera. Demonstrated by comparative evaluations, the determinants of species richness of a plant's entomofauna and the role of habitat stability and other features in the evolution of life-history strategies, especially migration. Has also been much involved in public policy in relation to environmental pollution, radiological protection and sustainable development. Current research concerns insection biodiversity.
