Writer, Professor of English, The George Washington University. Author of nine novels: Finale (2015), Watergate (2012), Fellow Travelers (2007), Bandbox (2004), Two Moons (2000), Dewey Defeats Truman (1997), Henry and Clara (1994), Aurora 7 (1991), and Arts and Sciences (1988); as well as seven works of nonfiction: Yours Ever: People and Their Letters (2009), Mrs. Paine's Garage and the Murder of John F. Kennedy (2002), In Fact: Essays on Writers and Writing (2001), Rockets and Rodeos (1993), Stolen Words (1989), A Book of One's Own: People and Their Diaries (1984), and Edmund Blunden (1983). Frequent contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Times Book Review. Recipient of Guggenheim and Rockefeller Fellowships and the Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award for distinguished prose style from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Received a National Book Critics Circle Citation for Reviewing (1998) and the Ingram Merrill Award. Former Literary Editor of GQ. Taught English at Vassar College from 1979 to 1991. Appointed a member of the National Council on the Humanities in 2002. Served as Deputy Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities (2005-2006).
