Left a tenured faculty appointment at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1955 to join The Travelers Insurance Companies where he went on to become Senior Vice President and Director of Research. While on leave from MIT between 1949 and 1951, he edited the 1300 page Compedium of Meterology that set the stage for meterological research in the second half of the 21st century. A past national president of Sigma Xi, he was named Founding Director of the Sigma Xi Center in 1992. He also served as national president of the American Meterological Society and the American Geophysical Union, and was elected Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences in 1978 (four year term).
