Climate scientist; Educator
Area
Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Specialty
Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Earth Sciences
Elected
2016
International Honorary Member
One of the world's leaders in Earth and climate science. His research combines climate modelling with physically-based measurements of climate variables, mainly in ice cores. Stocker's team has conducted highly accurate measurements of greenhouse gases in polar ice cores dating back 800,000 years and developed the first earth system model of intermediate complexity. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in the area of climate dynamics and paleoclimate modelling and reconstruction. He has led as co-chair the physical sciences component of the climate change assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change from 2008 to 2015.
