Leader in studying genetic factors influencing recombination in yeast. Pioneered the use of DNA manipulation to define structural differences useful as genetic markers. Discovered several genes that affect yeast chromosome structure and recombination. Foresaw that defects in homologous human genes would cause a predisposition to cancer.
