Served as president of the University of Virginia from 2010-2018 and is a leading figure in higher education in America. Led Virginia into a new era of strategic planning, accountability, and financial stability. She fostered innovations in the curriculum, including hybrid courses and online learning. She also completed a $3 billion capital campaign. For more than three decades she has been a respected scholar in labor force demography and co-wrote or wrote six books and many scholarly articles in sociology. In articulating the fundamental issues in higher education, consumer debt, and the future of the middle class, she will make major contributions to the Academy.
