A leading gastroenterologist, Dr. Yamada's research discoveries early in his career characterized the post-translational processing and biological activation of peptide hormones, the structure and function of receptors for hormones regulating gastric function and the regulation of genes involved in acid secretion. He is also the founding editor of Yamada's Textbook of Gastroenterology (now in its Sixth Edition, 2017), and was the Chairman of Medicine at the University of Michigan until 1996. He subsequently served as the Chairman of R&D at GlaxoSmithKline, the President of Global Health for the Gates Foundation, and the Chief Medical and Science Officer for Takeda.
