Ms. Sylvia Poggioli is senior European correspondent for the international desk at NPR, where she covers stories in Italy, the Vatican, Western Europe, and the Balkans. Some of her coverage over the years have included significant historical events like the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, the Yugoslavian civil war, and the transformation of European countries due to immigration. She has traveled all over Europe to produce in-depth reports on immigration, racism, Islam, and rise of the right in Europe. Formerly, Poggioli served as a correspondent and editor on the English-language desk for the Ansa News Agency in Italy and spent a year at the Kennedy School of Government as a research fellow. Due to her outstanding work, Poggioli is a recipient of the Edward Weintal Journalism Prize, National Women's Political Caucus/Radcliffe College Exceptional Merit Media Award, Silver Angel Excellence in the Media Award, Welles Hangen Award, George Foster Peabody Award, Maria Grazia Cutulli Award, and honorary degrees from UMass, Boston and Brandeis University.
