Syed Babar Ali is a Pakistani philanthropist and business leader, a former Minister of Finance, and a great champion of higher education as an instrument of social equity and national development. On the strength of his international and business connections, and his personal generosity, he founded in 1984 what is today one of the preeminent universities in Pakistan, the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). LUMS began as a business school, and has since added schools of law, engineering, education, and undergraduate liberal arts. Mr. Ali has deep and abiding commitments to the education of women, the health and education of underprivileged youth, teacher training, business ethics, and environmental protection.
