Search and information retrieval systems play an important role in the lives of people. Susan contributions involve developing new search systems and understanding how people interact with them. She takes an interdisciplinary and user-centered perspective in designing information systems and a broad-based approach to improving information access considering both algorithms and user experiences. Her contributions have helped build bridges between the information retrieval, human-computer interaction, and network science communities. A similar breadth is evident in her most influential papers, systems and awards, which include CHI Academy, SIGIR Lifetime Achievement, ACM Fellow, and the National Academy of Engineering.
