Avalon Foundation University Professor in the Humanities, Professor of English, and Director of the Society of Fellows at Princeton University. A poet, critic, and translator. MacArthur Fellow, Berlin Prize Fellow, Guggenheim Fellow, and recipient of an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Her Poetry and the Fate of the Senses, won both the Christian Gauss Award in 2002 and the Truman Capote Prize for Literary Criticism in 2004. Columbarium, a collection of poems, won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2003. Translator of Alda Merini and Milo De Angelis. Writes frequently on contemporary art and has had commissions for libretti from the Chicago Symphony and the New Music Foundation in Philadelphia.
