Dr. Susan Kalisz is recognized for her contributions to the study of natural selection, including empirical studies that employ demographic approaches for the study of life history evolution. Her work catalyzed a new research direction that merged natural history, ecology, and evolutionary biology. She is also a leader in the study of plant mating system evolution, publishing influential empirical studies, organizing working groups that have produced a number of synthetic reviews and developing the genus Collinsia as a model for mating system studies. Finally, her long-term, demographic studies of an invasive herb illustrate the complex ecological interactions that affect population spread.
