He purified and characterized biochemically the first Type I restriction endonuclease. He has made extensive contributions to studies of nucleases and many other enzymes of DNA metabolism. He is an expert in DNA repair, especially AP endonucleases and base excision repair and DNA polymerases and oxidative DNA damage. Finally, he has made extensive contributions to our understanding and characterization of oxygen radicals and reactive oxygen species.
