Steven Shapin is Emeritus Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University. His previous appointments were in the Science Studies Unit at Edinburgh University and the Department of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego. Much of his past work was on the 17th-century Scientific Revolution, and, more recently, on aspects of the modern scientific role and on the history of dietetics and taste. Shapin writes regularly for the London Review of Books and has written for The New Yorker. Some awards include the Robert K. Merton Prize of the American Sociological Association for A Social History of Truth, the J. D. Bernal Prize of the Society for Social Studies of Science, the George Sarton Prize of the History of Science Society, and the 2005 Erasmus Prize.
