Stephen Wolfram is a physicist, computer scientist, and author. As CEO of Wolfram Research, he has made major contributions to the field of cellular automata and is the creator of Mathematica, an algebraic software system; WolframAlpha, a search engine; and the Wolfram programming language. His early scientific work was mainly in high-energy physics, quantum field theory and cosmology, for which he earned a MacArthur Fellowship in 1981, making him then the youngest recipient of the award. He is the author of several books, including A New Kind of Science, which argues for the use of computational systems over mathematics in the study of the physical world.
