Since 2005, served as chair of the American Assembly of Columbia University, a New York-based, not-for-profit organization involved in the study of public affairs; he also held this position from 1987-2003. Served in the US Bureau of the Budget and other areas of the federal government; formerly corporate vice president of Exxon Corporation. Other areas of public service include chairmanship of the Marlboro School of Music and co-chairmanship of the American Trust for the British Library; trustee, the Nasher Foundation and Nasher Sculpture Center; trustee emeritus of the New York Philharmonic where he was president from 1984-1989 and Chairman from 1989-1996; director-emeritus of Lincoln Center; and formerly a member and president of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University.
