Medical scientist and educator whose work has contributed greatly to current understanding of the human demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis (MS). He developed the first accurate disease model and identified myelin oligodendroctyle glycoprotein as an MS autoantigen. His work in the genetics of MS has generated a comprehensive map of the location of MS susceptibility genes. A physician-scientist, he continues to play an active role in clinical medicine and medical education.
