Steve Harris is known for many contributions to quantum optics and laser physics. These include the first demodulation of frequency modulated light, the co-invention of the FM laser, the first observation of parametric down-conversion, the invention of the tunable acousto-optic filter, the demonstration of phase matched nonlinear processes in metal vapors, the first demonstration of laser induced collisions, a suggestion for lasing without the need for population inversion, and the co-invention of electromagnetically induced transparency and its application to non-linear and quantum optics.
