Poet, Distinguished University Professor. Author of numerous books of poems; his most recent collection, Old Heart (2007), won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Paterson Poetry Prize, and was nominated for the National Book Award. Most recent critical study, Posthumous Keats: A Personal Biography (2008), is a widely praised study notable for its original and poignantly lyrical approach to a well-known life. Appointed Poet Laureate of Maryland in 2009. Other honors include the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award, the Ingram-Merrill Foundation Award, fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the NEA, and six Pushcart Prizes.
