 Stanley Engerman was the John Munro Professor of Economics at the University of Rochester. He also was a visiting professor at Harvard University from 2009 to 2012 where he taught the economics of sports and entertainment. His research topics included economic history and the history of slavery and abolition. Engerman served as the President of both the Social Science History Association and Economic History Association. Engerman was known for his work, Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery with Robert Fogel in 1974. The book won the Bancroft Prize in American History.
