A leading authority on multicultural and social justice in education, teacher education, and bilingual education, with a specific focus on Latino/a students. Sonia Nieto has authored over a dozen academic books and numerous articles and book chapters on these topics. More generally, she has been concerned with the consequences of economic, social and political inequality for educational outcomes. She was elected to the National Academy of Education in 2015, and is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), as well as a laureate of Kappa Delta Pi, the educational honor society. Additionally, Dr. Nieto has received nine honorary doctorates, as well as several awards from AERA, including the Distinguished Career Award for Scholars of Color and the Henry T. Trueba Lifetime Achievement Award, among others. She has also been recognized as an Honoree of the Governor's Award for the Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and has been a visiting scholar in several universities in the United States, as well as in South Africa, China, and Spain. As an author, researcher, professor, and mentor, she has helped shape the national conversation on education and inclusion in the U.S. and beyond.
