Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Cape Town. Adjunct Proessor Dalla Lana School of Public Health University of Toronto Research interests have evolved from a range of projects in respiratory medicine and health care services to medical ethics and human rights. He has written on asthma, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, health care and health care reform, the need for universal access to health care, care of detainees and hunger strikers, the legacy of apartheid on health care in South Africa. Present research interests include public, global and planetary health with their associated ethical challenges, and cross-cultural communication .
