Sherry B. Ortner is Distinguished Research Professor of Anthropology at UCLA.  She received her A.B. from Bryn Mawr College in 1962, and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1970. She has received numerous grants and fellowships, including a (“genius”) fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in 1990.  She has done extensive fieldwork in Nepal and the United States, and has published monographs on Sherpa religion, the Sherpa role in Himalayan mountaineering, an American high school, and the world of American independent film. She has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been awarded the Retzius Medal of the Society of Anthropology and Geography of Sweden.
