Kagan's research focuses on analytic moral philosophy, especially normative ethics. He has authored many works on consequentialism in particular, and on moral theory more generally. Most recently, he published a major work on moral desert, The Geometry of Desert (2012). His most significant contributions to the field have been his books, The Limits of Morality (1989), Normative Ethics (1998), and Death (2012). This latter text is based on his popular course at Yale, which has been recorded on Open Yale Courses and has gained immense popularity in China and South Korea.
