Mullainathan is a research specialist in development economics, behavioral economics, and corporate finance. Cofounder of ideas42, a nonprofit organization devoted to taking insights about people from behavioral economics and using them to create novel policies, interventions, and products. Published extensively in American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, and Journal of Political Economy. He is Assistant Director of Research at the U.S. Treasury's newly minted Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, founding member of the Poverty Action Lab, and board member of the Bureau of Research in the Economic Analysis of Development.
