Leading organic chemist who demonstrated that small, peptidic catalysts can mimic enzymes in their function and selectivity. Using a combinatorial approach coupled with rational design, Miller has devised catalysts for key enantioselective reactions including C-C bond formations, oxidations and highly original atropisomer-selective reactions. Miller has also achieved dramatic site-selective, catalytic modifications of complex natural products including erythromycin and vancomycin. Miller's role in stimulating the field of asymmetric catalysis based on enzyme-like features has been instrumental. His work combines unusual creativity, scholarly conviction and interdisciplinary ideas that have expanded the frontiers of organic chemistry.
