Research and intellectual interests are in comparative political science. He has done special studies of political parties, public opinion, electoral behavior, and political leadership. He has done such research in the U.S., Europe (Netherlands and Germany primarily), India and Mainland China. His latest book is an empirical study of cadre and mass political attitudes and values in four counties in China, 1990-1996.
