Ruth Scodel, D. R. Shackleton Bailey Collegiate Professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Michigan since 2005, is a leading authority on ancient Greek poetry from Homer through tragedy. She has published ten highly regarded scholarly books and textbooks and hundreds of articles and book reviews. She is respected and admired for the fearless independence of her thinking, for her deep knowledge of the ancient texts and the international scholarship, for her remarkably undoctrinaire openness to contemporary literary theories, and for her indefatigable commitment to helping women, the young, and minorities. She was elected President of the American Philological Association (now Society for Classical Studies) in 2007.
