Fazio is known for his contributions to theory and research concerning attitudes and social cognition. His view of attitudes as object-evaluations associations in memory proved innovative, both at the theoretical and methodological levels, and contributed to the ways in which researchers both conceptualize and measure attitudes. The research has elucidated processes of attitude formation, the automatic activation of attitudes from memory, and their impact on fundamental cognitive processes of attention and categorization, as well as judgments and behavior. Recipient of the Donald T. Campbell Award for career achievement from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (2010).
