Professor Ronald L. Numbers is the Hildale and William Coleman Professor Emeritus of the History of Science and Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He attended Southern Missionary College for his B.A., Florida State for his Masters, and University of California, Berkeley, for his Ph.D. He has been a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin since 1974, holding many positions. In addition, Numbers served as the editor of Isis with from 1989 to 1993. His research focuses on the history of science, medicine, and religion in America. He has written books on such historical topics as Laplace's cosmogony in the United States, the Adventist prophetess Ellen G. White, compulsory health insurance, creationism, and Darwinism in America. He is currently writing a history of science in America and co-editing the eight-volume Cambridge History of Science. His publications have earned him awards and prizes such as the Albert C. Outler Prize, the Sarton Medal, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and election as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  He has served as president of the History of Science Society, the American Society of Church History, and the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science.
