He has done innovative works in several large areas of applied mathematics, including numerical computation of fluid flows, slow dynamics and intertial manifolds, turbulence theory, and climate modeling. The Math Genealogy website lists him as having 118 Ph.D. students and 440 mathematical descendants. His publication record is ranked 24th all-time in field strength by Microsoft Academic Search, among all mathematicians in all fields. Awards include membership in the French Academy of Sciences, fellow of the American Mathematical Society, of the Society for Industrial and  Applied Mathematics, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, and knighthood in the French Legion of Honor.
