Dr. Roderic Pettigrew is a pioneer of four-dimensional MRI of the cardiovascular system, now used worldwide. He helped develop the first systems for Picker International (1983-4), the Philips MRI scanners (1987), and techniques for blood flow quantification. He was founding director (2002-2017) of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) at the National Institutes of Health. Under Pettigrew’s leadership, NIBIB--known for technological innovation--had the highest patent production per dollar (3000%) of any US agency. He continues to uniquely advance science through leadership of a new blended ENgineering and MEDical school, ENMED, to train the nation’s first “Physicianeers” to invent healthcare solutions.
