Made contributions to understanding the structure and function of apolipoprotein E (apoE) in atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. Has identified small molecules that convert the structure of apoE4 to an apoE3-like protein and in so doing blocks the detrimental effects of apoE4 in neuropathology. Under his leadership, Gladstone grew to more than 400 employees in three institutes focused on heart disease, HIV/AIDS and neurodegenerative disorders.
