International leader in the study of human prefrontal cortex physiology and function. Through the integrated use of electrophysiological and neuropsychological methods, he made seminal contributions to our understanding of the neural networks that support cognition, with a focus on the frontal lobes. He helped spearhead the development of direct electrical recording from the cortex in awake human subjects. This proved to be a powerful tool for exploring information coding within and connectivity within the human brain. Knight's work has profound implications for understanding cognition and behavior in healthy individuals, and people with disabling neurological and psychiatric disorders.
