Dr. Robert P. Colwell is the former Deputy Director, Microsystems Technology Office at the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency, U.S. Department of Defense, Arlington, Virginia. He was the chief Architect of Intel's IA32 (x86) processors between 1992 and 2001, with responsibility for all of the firm's Pentium CPU architecture efforts. Dr. Colwell has contributed to very long instruction word (VLIW) architectures, superscalar processor design, and a wide range of specific architectural features that substantially enhanced the performance of chips used in personal computers. In addition, he is the author of "The Pentium Chronicles: The People, Passion, and Politics behind Intel's Landmark Chips" (2005) and inventor or co-inventor on forty patents. He is a fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Colwell has received the Eckert-Mauchly Award in 2005 for outstanding achievements in the design and implementation of industry-changing microarchitectures.
