Research is focused on two areas: cellular differentiation in nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and the molecular genetics of the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase in wheat and in malaria-like parasites. Former chair of the Midwest Center and Council Member. Member of NAS and of the editorial board of PNAS.
