Professor Robert Parr was a Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to his appointment at UNC, he taught at Carnegie Mellon University and Johns Hopkins University. His research focused on methods of computing approximate molecular orbitals for pi electron systems and density functional theory (DFT). He contributed to the discovery of the Pariser-Parr-Pople method. He is a recipient of American Chemical Society's Irving Langmuir Award, United States National Academy of Sciences Award, and American Chemical Society's Award.
